The basic formula
ROI = (revenue attributed to marketing − marketing cost) ÷ marketing cost × 100. If £2,000 of spend produced £8,000 of gross profit, the ROI is 300%. Using gross profit rather than revenue gives a truer picture.
Metrics that matter
- Cost per lead (CPL)
- Lead-to-customer conversion rate
- Cost per acquisition (CPA)
- Return on ad spend (ROAS) for paid campaigns
- Customer lifetime value (CLV)
Set up tracking first
- Define conversions in Google Analytics 4 — forms, calls, purchases
- Use UTM parameters on every campaign link
- Record lead source in your CRM or spreadsheet
- Track phone calls with call tracking where calls matter
Account for time lags
SEO and content can take months to pay back, and B2B sales cycles can be long. Report on leading indicators monthly, but judge ROI over a realistic period.
