Start with your customers
List the problems customers bring to you and the phrases they use on calls and in emails. These seed ideas are often more valuable than anything a tool suggests.
Understand search intent
Informational
The searcher wants to learn — for example "how does local SEO work". Serve with guides.
Commercial
The searcher is comparing options — "best SEO agency for small business". Serve with service and comparison pages.
Transactional
The searcher is ready to act — "get a PPC quote". Serve with clear service and contact pages.
Navigational
The searcher wants a specific brand or site. Make sure your own brand searches lead somewhere useful.
Use data sensibly
- Google Search Console shows queries you already appear for — often the best opportunities
- Keyword tools estimate volume and difficulty; treat the figures as directional, not exact
- Look at the current results page to see what kind of content Google rewards
Group, don't scatter
Combine closely related keywords into one comprehensive page instead of creating many near-duplicate pages. This avoids competing with yourself and produces a better page for readers.
